Noritake Nippon Phoenix ware tea cup
SKU: CW55Loose porcelain tea cup decorated with the blue and white transfer print Flying Phoenix, which was popular in Japan between 1900 and 1945. Phoenixware was mainly made for export. The cup and saucer are made of egg porcelain and, although transparent and fragile looking, are exceptionally strong.
The used brand 'Nippon Tokusei' (= Japan Special Made) with the rising sun in blue, is attributed to the Japanese manufacturer Noritake. The order of the two top characters of the brand, which display the word Nippon, from right to left, indicates manufacture before World War II. Tokusei ware with the word Nippon written from left to right was produced after World War II. These cups were made before WWII, around 1930.
Dimensions: diameter cup 9 cm and 4.5 cm high.
