In 1783, the three Greiner brothers founded the Friedrich Christian Greiner und Söhne porcelain factory in Rauenstein Castle in the town of the same name in Thuringia. Following the successful blue and white Meissen porcelain, they entered into competition, with the difference that the Rauenstein products were made of thicker porcelain and therefore broke less quickly than the Meissen products. Greiner und Söhne, popularly called Rauenstein, was owned by the Greiner family until 1893.
