Norwegian folk art, hand carved wooden ale bowl, known as a Kjenge. The bowl has two horse head handles, a fertility symbol in Norway. The bowl would have been passed around at celebrations. Ale bowls typically stayed with the farm or house where they were made. When the farm or home changed owners, the bowl would have been left with the new owners.
Carved from a single piece of wood. Handpainted with floral patterns.
Norway, mid 19th century.
Dimensions: 25 cm x 17.5 cm and 11 cm high.
Condition: no wear of the painting. One of the horse heads has a repair, see photo.
